Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse
July 10, 2017
This particular commission came about when Detective Chief Inspector Peter Fox put his job on the line and revealed overwhelming evidence of ongoing child sexual abuse and systemic cover-ups in NSW. It's purpose is law reform. With two elections since its inception, what has become of this Royal Commission?
Prosecution Process
July 07, 2017
The purpose of the commission is to re-write laws to prevent systemic cover-up of child abuse in the future. It is not a criminal court and, as such, does not have the power to prosecute offenders. Under a just democracy, criminal offenders are entitled to 'Due Process' ie a fair trial in the criminal courts. Given the high number of court suppression orders issued to date, are we sure the criminal courts are effective in prosecuting offenders?
Offenders of Child Sex Abuse
July 17, 2017
Many child sex abusers are getting away with (in some cases) hundreds of attacks on victims by admitting guilt to only attacking 1 or 2 victims. Many have also had their sentences wholly suspended due to various excuses such as holding prominent positions within the community. And even fewer guilty verdicts result in registration on the national sex offenders list. Is the criminal justice system too soft on them?
Victims of Child Sex Abuse
July 02, 2017
Less than 10% of child sex abuse victims come forward, primarily due to low satisfaction in the justice system, and only 10% of those who do come forward actually receive justice. Contradictory to our largely heterosexual population, an overwhelming majority of cases that have resulted in any action lately are male-on-male attacks. Why are females under represented in the justice system?
Rights of Privacy
June 27, 2017
For many child sex abuse victims, financial compensation is an empty gesture. The type of justice they seek is for perpetrators to be held personally accountable, to be publicly known for the monsters they truly are and to protect other children from their heinous crimes. Requiring victims to sign supression contracts on payment of compensation is equivalent to bribery. Should victims have a choice in speaking out against their attackers?
